St. Gregory – After School Jiu Jitsu Program

St. Gregory after school jiu jitsu program

St. Gregory the Great, nestled in the vibrant community of Whittier, embarked on an inspiring journey at the start of the 2022 school year. Driven by a vision to offer students more than just traditional classroom education, the school welcomed Reuben Ponce De Leon from the Los Angeles Jiu-Jitsu Academy to initiate an after-school program.

However, it wasn’t until the beginning of the 2023 school year that the program truly took flight, thanks to a generous grant from the Do Something Cool Foundation. This grant became the catalyst for transformative changes, elevating the program’s impact on the students and the community.

With the grant’s infusion, St. Gregory the Great’s after-school Jiu-Jitsu program witnessed a remarkable expansion. The funds were strategically utilized to provide additional mat space, ensuring a more engaging and dynamic learning environment. New uniforms added a sense of unity and identity, fostering a sense of belonging among the participating students.

One significant outcome of the grant’s support was the reduction in costs for parents, making the program more accessible to a broader spectrum of students. This financial relief played a pivotal role in driving enrollment, resulting in a threefold increase from the program’s humble beginnings. What started with five enthusiastic students blossomed into a thriving community of 15 eager participants.

The impact of the after-school program extends beyond the physical training on the mats. Students are not merely learning Jiu-Jitsu; they are developing discipline, resilience, and camaraderie. The program has become a hub of growth, where young minds are nurtured in both character and skill.

As we reflect on the journey from inception to flourishing, it’s clear that the grant provided to St. Gregory the Great has not only empowered the school but has also created a ripple effect of positive change in the lives of the students involved. The commitment to holistic education, enriched by this after-school initiative, stands as a testament to the power of community support and the enduring impact of investing in our youth.
